The Synthesis Telescope at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory

چکیده
We describe an aperture synthesis radio telescope optimized for studies of the Galactic interstellar medium (ISM), providing the ability to image extended structures with high angular resolution over wide fields. The telescope produces images of atomic hydrogen emission using the 21-cm H i spectral line, and, simultaneously, continuum emission in two bands centred at 1420MHz and 408MHz, including linearly polarized emission at 1420 MHz, with synthesized beams of 1′ and 3.4′ at the respective frequencies. A full synthesis can achieve a continuum sensitivity (rms) of 0.28mJy/beam at 1420MHz and 3.8mJy /beam at 408MHz, and the 256-channel H i spectrometer has an rms sensitivity of 3.5B−0.5 sin δ K per channel, for total spectrometer bandwidth B MHz and declination δ. The tuning range of the telescope permits studies of Galactic and nearby extragalactic objects. The array uses 9 m antennas, which provide very wide fields of view of 3.1◦ and 9.6◦ (at the 10% level), at the two frequencies, and also allow data to be gathered on short baselines, yielding extremely good sensitivity to extended structure. Single-antenna data are also routinely incorporated into images to ensure complete coverage of emission on all angular scales down to the resolution limit. In this paper we describe the telescope and its receiver and correlator systems in detail, together with calibration and observing strategies that make this instrument an efficient survey machine.

متن کاملThe peculiar nebula Simeis 57 I . Ionized Gas and Dust Extinction
We present high resolution radio continuum maps of the Galactic nebula Simeis 57 (= HS 191 = G 80.3+4.7) made at the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope and the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory at frequencies of 609, 1412 and 1420 MHz. At optical and at radio wavelengths, the nebula has a peculiar " S " shape, crossed by long, thin and straight filaments. The radio maps, combined with ...

متن کاملROSAT all-sky survey map of the Cygnus Loop: Overall structure and comparison with radio map
The Cygnus Loop is one of the largest and nearest supernova remnants. It was observed by the PSPC detector of the Röntgen-Satellite ROSAT during the survey phase of the ROSAT mission. This has resulted in the highest–sensitivity complete x-ray image of the Cygnus Loop. It also has the high spatial resolution of one arcmin and contains spectral information. It is thus the best map of the Cygnus ...
متن کاملRadio Spectral Index Variations of the SNR HB3
We present images of the SNR HB3 at both 408 MHz and 1420 MHz from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey mainly based on data from the Synthesis Telescope of the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory. We reproduce the 100m-Effelsberg HB3 image at 2695 MHz at large scale, and find that there exists a background emission gradient across the HB3 area. Based on our analysis of background emission a...
